BIRDING IN EAST ANGLIA The eastern England counties of Norfolk and Suffolk offer some of the best year-round birding opportunities in the UK. A series of world famous nature reserves stretch round the whole coastline from the mudflats of the Wash in West Norfolk to Minsmere in East Suffolk. Titchwell Marsh, Holkham Bay, Wells Woods, Blakeney Point, Cley Marshes, Winterton Dunes, the Blyth Estuary and scores of sites in between form a diverse range of linked habitats that attract millions of breeding and migrant birds throughout the year. Almost every birder in the UK has trodden the East Bank footpath at Cley Marshes, the place where birding began during the Victorian era. The gun has been replaced by binoculars and telescopes for bird study and the North Norfolk coast and hinterland has produced more nationally rare birds than any other mainland locality. Spring and autumn are the best times to see migrant species and May is the best month to see birds in pristine plumage. September and October often produce identification puzzles and pitfalls for the unwary but this is also the time of year when most rarities are found. In winter hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese and shorebirds inhabit the saltmarsh and coastal fields and flight movements of these birds are truly spectacular. Norfolk receives over one third of the world population of Pink-footed Geese from Greenland and Iceland, at least 90,000 birds and even greater numbers of Brent Geese from Siberia winter on the saltmarshes. Inland an intricate patchwork of woodland, heath, farmland and fen holds rare breeding birds such as Marsh Harrier, Honey Buzzard, Stone Curlew, Common Crane, Golden Oriole, Woodlark, Hawfinch and Cetti's Warbler plus many other more common species. We are delighted to offer you the chance to explore this wonderful birding area led by local ornithologist and natural historian Dr Ian Burrows who has over 40 years of birding experience in the UK and overseas. Depending on the time of year and individual interests an itinerary will be planned to optimise the number of species that can be seen.
